Brampton is a small town situated in the Northwest of England within the county of Cumbria, North of the Famous Lake District national park. Close to the historic city of Carlisle and Hadrian’s Wall, Brampton is an ideal base to explore the areas stunning scenery and bounty of historically significant and culturally important sites.

Brampton offers essential amenities including independent shops, supermarkets (Co-op and Spar), traditional pubs and cafes and a Chinese and Tandoori Takeaway as well as fish and chips. In the centre of the town is the iconic octagonal Moot Hall, built in 1817, with an external staircase to its upper entrance, pointed windows and a square turret.

St Martins Church is famous as the only church designed by the pre-Raphaelite architect Philip Webb and contains one of the most exquisite sets of stained-glass windows designed by Sir Edward Burne -Jones and executed in the William Morris studio. The old parish church on the outskirts of the town, was built using stone from Hadrian’s wall and was in use until 1878 when the new church replaced it. Only the chancel remains now.

Talkin Tarn Country Park lies two miles south-east of Brampton on the B613 Castle Carrock Road. There is a 65-acre lake set amid 120 acres of farmland and woodland. The tarn is an ideal place for active recreation or a quiet stroll through mature woodlands. About two miles south of Brampton is Gelt Wood, a delightful walk and RSPB Nature Reserve. In the wood is a rock with an inscription carved by a Roman Soldier in the 3rd century

Two significant Roman sites are located near Brampton on Hadrian’s Wall in Cumbria. Banks Turret is situated near the town, offering a glimpse into the defensive structures that once formed part of the wall’s fortifications. A few miles further along, Birdoswald Roman Fort stands as one of the best-preserved forts on Hadrian’s Wall, providing valuable insight into Roman military life and architecture in the region.
