22 circular walking routes to explore & discover
Set in the heart of Northumberland, the Haltwhistle Rings invite you to explore a landscape where history and nature are woven together in every step. These 22 circular walking routes radiate out from the small market town of Haltwhistle, guiding you through the rolling beauty of the South Tyne Valley and along the iconic frontier of Hadrian’s Wall.
Whether you’re in search of a gentle countryside stroll or a more challenging day hike, each route offers its own distinctive journey across farmland, woodland, and open moor. Born from a community effort to revive tourism after the 2001 Foot and Mouth outbreak, the Rings have grown into a much loved feature of the area and now form the backbone of the annual Haltwhistle Walking Festival. Every path loops neatly back to where it began, making it easy to lose yourself in the scenery without ever losing your way, while uncovering layers of local heritage along the route.
Walkers might pass the ruins of Bellister Castle, trace the echoes of old railway lines, or stand beside stretches of Roman history that have endured for nearly two millennia. The experience is as varied as the landscape itself, with shorter, relaxed walks of around four miles and longer, more demanding routes that stretch up to nine, each revealing a different perspective on this richly textured corner of England. With sturdy boots and a sense of curiosity, the Haltwhistle Rings offer not just a walk, but a journey through time, terrain, and the enduring spirit of the countryside.
