john martin trail

follow the footsteps of the Victorian Artist

The John Martin Trail is popular both as a walking challenge and a showcase of the landscapes which inspired the great Victorian artist John Martin, who was born in the village.

It links places in and around the village which played a part in Martin’s life and explores the hills and woods which he walked as a child and which provided a canvas for his later works. This route is in two sections, a moderate North route of 2.5 miles and moderately strenuous South route of 11.2 miles. Both walks start at ‘The Bridge’ Library and Community Hub, Church Street, Haydon Bridge.
