The South Tyne Trail to Lambley Viaduct offers a striking journey through the heart of the Northumberland countryside, following a gently graded route along a disused railway line that once carried trains through the valley.
Starting from the market town of Haltwhistle, the trail stretches for around 4.5 to 5.5 miles and is well suited to walkers and cyclists looking for a relaxed yet rewarding outdoor experience. The path unfolds with wide, open views of the River South Tyne and the surrounding landscape, gradually building anticipation for its most dramatic feature, the crossing of the impressive Lambley Viaduct. Rising high above the valley floor, the viaduct is a remarkable Victorian structure that spans nine elegant arches and extends for over 260 metres. Walking across it is a memorable moment, with sweeping views in every direction and a real sense of scale as the river winds far below.
The route itself blends natural beauty with echoes of industrial heritage, passing through quiet woodland, open fields, and areas shaped by former lead mining activity. Landmarks such as Featherstone Castle and Bellister Castle appear along the way, adding depth and character to the journey. Much of the trail is smooth and accessible, following the old railway bed, making it suitable for both walkers and cyclists, though some sections can become uneven or muddy after rain. Wildlife is a constant presence, with the chance to spot Red Squirrels in the trees or watch Dippers and Sandpipers along the riverbanks.
Many visitors choose to begin at either Haltwhistle Railway Station or the nearby Lambley Viaduct car park, spending a couple of hours exploring the viaduct and surrounding countryside before returning along the same route or looping back via riverside paths. Early mornings bring a quiet stillness that suits the landscape particularly well, while autumn adds another layer of interest as the river sometimes reveals migrating Salmon. With its mix of gentle walking, striking views, and rich heritage, the South Tyne Trail to Lambley Viaduct offers a memorable escape into one of the most scenic parts of the valley.
