The Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre is a welcoming, inclusive and inspiring destination at the southern tip of Northumberland National Park. Designed to connect people with the landscape, heritage and communities of the National Park, The Sill offers an experience that is accessible to all visitors, whatever their age, background or ability.

Accessibility is central to The Sill’s ethos. The building has been thoughtfully designed with level access throughout, clear signage, accessible toilets (changing places) and comfortable spaces to rest, making it easy to navigate and enjoy at a relaxed pace. Exhibitions are engaging and multi-sensory, with clear interpretation that invites everyone to explore the stories of the landscape. The on-site café also provides an inviting space to pause and enjoy locally sourced food in a calm, welcoming environment.

Crucially, The Sill’s commitment to inclusivity extends beyond the physical building. Staff recently undertook Dementia Friends training, strengthening their understanding of how dementia can affect individuals and how small, thoughtful actions can make a big difference. This training helps ensure that visitors living with dementia, along with their families and carers, feel understood, supported and confident during their visit. It reflects The Sill’s wider commitment to being a safe, friendly and compassionate place for everyone.

As well as being a destination in its own right, The Sill is a fantastic starting point for exploring the wider National Park. Situated close to iconic landscapes including Hadrian’s Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage site and Sycamore Gap, it provides inspiration, practical information and orientation for people keen to head outdoors. Just a short distance away lies Walltown, the National Park’s most accessible outdoor site. Renowned for its dramatic crags, sweeping views and excellent walking routes. This area offers an accessible gateway into the wild beauty of the Whin Sill, with accessible paths around the site suitable for a range of abilities.
